HALLELUJAH PRAISE THE LORD – Easter Sunday, Day 35

I’m slowly ticking off all the church services in the area. Today we went to a Born Again Christian church at the forestry college down the road. I must admit it was the most entertaining of all of them I have been to. “PRAAAAAAISE THE LORD….”said the pastor at the end of every sentence.

The pastor giving mass was a young man, dressed in white trousers, a white waistcoat with an cream-coloured shirt and a gold and black stripped tie. He was clean-shaven all over, including his head. His chiselled cheekbones caught the sunlight beaming in through the windows.

“…..And JEESUS RRRRRRROLLED THE STONE AWAY……….

“AND IT WAAAAS THEN………. THAT HEEEEE WAS SET FREEEEE!…..” exclaimed the pastor.

He bellowed into a microphone, despite the room being a small classroom. The speakers boomed and hissed as the organist found a samba beat on the electronic keyboard to accompany the hymn that had already started.

“AAAAAA-MEN” cheered the standing crowd clapping.

The music brought wailing and hand-shaking and people falling into a deep trance with their eyes tightly closed. I looked about the room taking in the scene, very different to the service at the Catholic and Protestant church I’d seen in the last month.

My mind wandered as the singing drowned out the sounds coming from outside and I gazed out of the window.

This morning Ricky, the intern vet slaughtered the cockerel. Being a vet he did a very good job and humanely I might add. From whole and alive to dead and plucked he and Herbert took no longer than about 3-minutes. The carcass was then dissected while I documented the whole episode on camera. Being a man of science Ricky took great pleasure in showing me the internal organs one by one as he discarded them. He checked for disease and gave the bird a clean bill of health and handed the meat over to the cook to work her magic.

“I CAN SEE SOME PEOPLE ARE DOZING…..LET ME CAAAAST OUT THE SPIRIT OF SLEEP FROM YOUR MINDS SO THAT YOU MAY PRAAAAY IN THE NAME OF THE JEESUS CHRIST OUR LORD……. AAAAA-MEN!” said the pastor.

He flashed me a look and I smiled. Daydreaming maybe, but certainly not dozing.

After church we piled back into the van looking forward to our hearty of lunch of stewed cockerel, boiled rice and dodo (sautéed greens with onions) with chapatis. We all agreed it was certainly the best lunch we could have prayed for.
