The day we drove to Khongoryn Els Sand Dunes in Gobi we got a flat tyre.
Volcanic rock, harsh terrain, nothing for miles and miles and miles. The outside temperature was 39 degrees Celsius (102.2F). The car had taken a battering and we had no air con.
Were we even driving in the right direction?
4 hours later, the sight of the white rolling dunes glowing in the sunlight made my heart skip a beat.
When we finally skidded over, bouncing our way closer, I raced out of the car, slamming the door and scrambled up the first big dune in front of me, leaving my footprints.
The wind was strong and I had to battle not to fall over.
These beautiful soft sandy peaks are also known as the “Singing Dunes” because of the sound they make when you slide down them.
Within minutes the wind had blown these dunes smooth again erasing all traces of me being there.
A stunning landscape and one that spoke to my inner child!!
Getting ready to slide down!!
Can you spot the car??

Wonderful to be in such an isolated spot but with a flat tyre? That would most definitely take me out of my comfort zone. I would have had full scale meltdown. How did you cope?

Haha, Mongolia is not somewhere anyone who can’t handle the unexpected should ever visit. The entire Gobi territory is very remote, so you need to make sure you have enough water, and can speak Kazakh or have a guide in case you have an emergency. Water is key!!! Gobi is an extraordinary place. It was a privilege to be somewhere that isn’t over populated and see nature, raw and as it should be. Sadly mining is happening in places, so drive for long enough and you will find people.
